No matter where you are on your health and fitness journey, staying motivated and accountable can be a challenge. Heck, I’ve been working out for 4 years now, and I still have days, weeks.. even months where I really don’t feel like going to the gym or lacing up my running shoes. But I’ve discovered different ways to keep myself on track over the years! Here are a few of my favorites:
- Keep a journal. Writing down your goals, and speaking freely about your mistakes, concerns, triumphs and progress can be incredibly motivating. If you’re a particularly private or shy person, this is a great way to “voice” your feelings, without feeling completely vulnerable! You can use good old-fashioned pen and paper.. or, if you’re concerned about privacy, there are apps for computers, tablets and iPhones that are password protected and allow you to easily type in your entries!
- Find a training or accountability partner! Having someone around with similar goals as you can be a fantastic way to stay on track. The next time you feel like binging on cookies or skipping your workout, give your friend a text, and prepare to do the same for them! Make sure whoever you choose has a similar work ethic, so you don’t wind up having to do all the work (or vice versa)!
- Take to Twitter (or your social media of choosing). Sometimes, using social media can be incredibly helpful when you’re trying to stay on track. Publicly voicing your cravings, can give you time to really think about the decision. “Ugh, I could really go for a Double Double and fries right about now”. Not to mention, friends who support your goals are likely to weigh-in with supportive tweets back. Not that cravings for a burger and fries are the end of the world… but let’s face it… sometimes deep down we know we’ve eaten enough that day, and shouldn’t be having junk food! You can also talk about victories, whether it be running an extra mile or beating a personal record in the gym!
- Join a support group on Facebook. There are a wide variety of fitness support groups available on Facebook… find one that fits your goals! The lovely ladies in my fitness support group on Facebook are about to start a new challenge! Thanks to social media, it makes it so much easier to find “gym partners” from all around the world. Reaching a health and fitness goal is hard. Let’s face it, the best things in life usually are. But the good news is, you can make the journey a little less tough! There are a variety of ways to keep yourself accountable and motivated along the way… and I hope one of these is just right for you!
