Post-Surgery Nutrition
“I’m having surgery in my mouth next week and won’t be able to eat anything that isn’t really soft because I’ll be in a lot of pain. Since I won’t be able to work out much, should I still have protein shakes, or is there something else I can eat?”
Depending on the extent of your surgery (and obviously any food allergies you may have) there are plenty of foods you can eat until your mouth heals. Many doctors will recommend things like sorbet, jell-o and other unhealthy, soft, junk food. Unfortunately, these foods will do more harm than good. Most doctors are fairly ignorant when it comes to nutrition (rant for another post) 😉 But it’s important to continue to eat healthy and feed your body the nutrients it needs to function well and heal during your recovery!
Protein shakes are going to be your best friend… but the thing is, they don’t always have to contain protein powder. Look into pasteurized egg whites such as those by Muscle Egg Egg Whites. They don’t taste ANYTHING like eggs.. in fact they have a chocolate and a chocolate caramel flavor!!! You can blend any flavor of that with some fruit or veggies and healthy fats and you have yourself a meal, but in shake form!
You can also do some shakes with protein powder as well, just don’t do it for EVERY meal! Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are other great options to add to shakes, along with fruit, veggies or healthy fats!
Green smoothies actually taste really great and there are a ton of recipes available online. In addition, their are ENDLESS possibilities for protein shakes.. so get creative!
